Civil War letters, 1862-1863, 2009.

Civil War letters of Col. William A. Greene, 16th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry and 29th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry, dating from March 1862 through September 1863. The bulk of the letters, addressed to Greene's father, discuss Greene's disgust at cotton trading officers, his efforts to gain promotion, and his experiences at camp and in the field. Particular letters of interest are those which were written shortly after the Battle of Shiloh and those from the siege and surrender of Vicksburg. Biographical information and summaries and transcriptions of the letters, compiled by David A. Payne (2009), are also included. In addition, there is a history of Wisconsin troops during the campaign and siege of Vicksburg, a roster of the Wisconsin Volunteers at Vicksburg, scanned and digital images of each letter, and one image of Greene while in the military.
